Chats are for questions, exploration, follow-ups, and Routines. Projects are for building applications and creating slides and designs. You can also request a change to an existing project from a chat. The request starts in the chat; the task runs in the project. Learn how to work with projects from a chat.

How they differ

Although they’re linked, chats and Projects serve different purposes. This is how they differ:

Update an existing project

You do not need to create a new project or open an existing one before requesting a change. Ask Replit to find your project and describe the update:
Find my budgeting app and create a task to add CSV export. Link me to the task.
Replit delegates the work as a background task in the project. Open the linked task to follow its progress, review changes, and continue work there. Your chat stays a chat. Use the project environment for focused building, collaboration, and visual iteration. Requesting an edit does not automatically publish your app. Follow the update an existing project walkthrough.
